The 9–10 h overland pilgrimage — broken sensibly at the Equator, Mbarara or Lake Mburo.
Tarmac nearly all the way, but distance and traffic make it a full day: Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara–Kabale–Kisoro for the southern sectors, or branch at Ntungamo for Ruhija/Buhoma. Most trekkers break the journey with a night at Lake Mburo NP or Mbarara and arrive the day before their permit. Private 4×4 with driver-guide is the standard arrangement (US$150–250/day incl. fuel); the postbus and relief buses to Kisoro are the shoestring alternative.
