Four to five hours of increasingly empty road into the great sand sea.
Tarmac runs from Maun toward Rakops; the Matswere gate and the sand tracks beyond are proper 4×4 country, deep-sand and corrugated, with nothing between fuel stops. Guided mobile operators run supported routes; self-drivers plan fuel for 600 km, carry recovery gear, and confirm track conditions at the gate. The Deception Valley campsites sit another 2–3 hours inside the reserve.
