Five hours of escarpment and gravel to the dunes — the country’s signature drive.
From Windhoek: B1 south to Rehoboth and Kalkrand, then the C26/D1266 over the Spreetshoogte-style escarpment views toward Sesriem — tarmac most of the way with the final approach on good gravel. From Swakopmund it is the C14 via the Kuiseb Canyon, one of Africa’s great scenic drives. The last 60 km inside the park to Sossusvlei itself is tarred; the 2WD-to-4×4 shuttle at the Deadvlei parking covers the soft sand.

Gravel-road speeds max ~80 km/h — punctures are the national pastime, carry two spares on remote routes. Check road conditions after rains (passable reports at fuel stops).
