Nyungwe is what all of Central Africa’s rainforest once was — 1,000 km² of ancient montane canopy strung along the Congo-Nile Divide. The canopy walkway at Uwinka is the headline (and genuinely vertiginous), chimp tracking in the Cyamudongo satellite forest has a solid success rate, and the colobus habituation sometimes runs into the hundreds in one troop. Tea estates at Gisakura and Kitabi frame the park’s edges.

What to pack

Rain layers mandatory (forest weather is its own government), leech socks or gaiters in the wet season, warm clothes for 2,000–2,900 m mornings, and binoculars the canopy walk was built for.

Park fees

Park entry ≈ US$60–100/day by activity package; chimp permits ≈ US$150–200; canopy walk ≈ US$60 (guided, from Uwinka). Book chimps ahead through RDB or WDA — rates change.

Wildlife safety

Chimp rules as everywhere (8 m, no illness). The canopy bridge takes one group at a time — if heights are a real issue, take the Igishigishigi ground trail instead.
