Akagera is the rewilding success story of the decade: a joint Rwanda Development Board–African Parks management rebuilt a poached-out landscape into a functioning Big Five ecosystem with electric fencing on the boundary and a genuinely scenic mix of lakes, papyrus swamps and acacia savanna. The southern circuit (Kilala plains, Lake Ihema) suits a single day; the northern Magashi side holds the lions and rhinos. Self-drive is permitted and easy from Kigali in a 2WD in the dry season.

What to pack

Sun kit, binoculars, and offline maps — track signage is sparse. Malaria prophylaxis advice applies (lower-lying than the rest of Rwanda).

Park fees

Entry ≈ US$35–50/day (RDB), Ihema boat ≈ US$35–40, night drive ≈ US$40. Camping from ≈ US$25. Rates change — confirm with Akagera Management Company/RDB.

Wildlife safety

Stay in vehicles outside designated points; buffalo herds on the northern tracks are ill-tempered. Tsetse flies bite around the lakes — long sleeves help.
