Tsavo is vast — over 21,000 km² of it — and feels wilder and emptier than the Mara. East is classic open-plane game viewing along the Galana and Aruba; West is green and volcanic, with Mzima Springs’ hippo viewing chamber, the Shetani lava flow and crater-chained Chyulu Hills views. The SGR stops at Mtito Andei and Voi, so you can rail in, game-drive, and continue to the coast.

What to pack

Light long sleeves for thorn country, sun protection, and a good map or offline navigation — Tsavo’s track network is thin and distances deceptive. Fuel up at Voi, Mtito Andei or Nachu gates.

Park fees

KWS entry roughly USD 50–60 per adult day depending on season and park, less for citizens. Camping and vehicle fees extra. Confirm current rates with KWS.

Wildlife safety

Tsavo’s elephants are less habituated than Amboseli’s — give them wide berth. Walk only with armed KWS rangers where offered (Mzima, Ngulia).
