A UNESCO-listed Swahili stone town and the oldest continuously inhabited town in Kenya — no cars, just narrow coral-stone lanes, donkeys and dhows. Lamu rewards slow travel: rooftop dinners, dhow trips to Takwa ruins, and the annual Lamu Cultural Festival. Reach it by flight to Manda airstrip; the long road journey is not recommended for first-timers.
