When to see gorillas — and Uganda vs Rwanda

Mountain gorillas live in exactly two places: the Virunga volcano chain and Uganda’s Bwindi. Between them, Uganda and Rwanda are the entire gorilla market — so the real questions are when, and which side.
When to go
- June–August and December–February are the drier windows: firmer trails, easier photography, peak demand. Permits sell out months ahead — book the moment flights are held.
- March–May and September–November bring rain, but gorillas do not take rainy days off. You will be wetter, muddier, sometimes lone trekkers on the trailhead — and some operators discount lodges.
- Gorilla trekking happens year-round; the hour with the family is unchanged by weather.

Choose Uganda for value, longer/more rugged treks, and combining chimps plus savanna parks. Choose Rwanda for a short trip (a Kigali long weekend suffices), gentler trails, or bucket-list single-day logistics.
Booking mechanics
Permits are issued by UWA (Uganda) and RDB (Rwanda), or seamlessly via licensed operators who also solve the unglamorous parts: the sector-to-lodge match (in Uganda, your permit sector dictates your lodge), porters, and the 4×4 transfers. Request specific sectors — Buhoma for the classic, Rushaga/Nkuringo for the habituation experience and Rwanda-side access.
