Treating Uganda as “the gorilla country” undersells the most varied safari menu in East Africa. The classic loop adds three stops that most visitors now rate alongside the gorillas themselves.
Kibale: the best chimp tracking on Earth
Bwindi’s neighbours beat gorilla-country hype every time with Kibale Forest — 13 primate species and a ~95 % chimp-tracking success rate. The standard three-hour trek costs a fraction of a gorilla permit; the full-day habituation experience (CHEX) shadows a troop from nest to nest with researchers. Pair it with the community-run Bigodi Wetland walk for turacos, monkeys and swamp.
Murchison Falls: the Nile’s best party trick
Uganda’s largest park is worth the drive or the hop for a single image — the entire Victoria Nile forcing through a 7 m gorge. Add the delta boat cruise, the giraffe-dense north bank, and a Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stop on the road in, and you complete the Big Five in one circuit.
Queen Elizabeth: the connector park
Between Kibale and Bwindi sits QENP: the Kazinga Channel boat safari (hippos by the hundred), Ishasha’s genuinely tree-climbing lions, and crater lakes under the Rwenzoris. It is the park that turns two gorilla-adjacent destinations into a single coherent road trip.
And Jinja for the finish
End at the Source of the Nile in Jinja: grade-5 rafting, quad bikes, or a sunset beer where the world’s longest river begins its 6,650 km run to the Mediterranean.
