Self-drive Namibia: roads, distances and the fuel discipline

Self-drive Namibia: roads, distances and the fuel discipline

Namibia · 2026-09-25 · 7 min read

Namibia was built for road trips: good tarmac between towns, graded gravel to everything else, traffic so thin you measure it in gemsbok. It also kills more unwary visitors through driving than through anything else. Here is the operating manual.

The road classification

The three iron rules

  1. Never drive at night. Kudu, cattle and unlit oncoming vehicles make dusk-to-dawn driving genuinely dangerous. Plan every leg to arrive before sunset — Namibia’s sunsets are also worth being parked for.
  2. Gravel speed discipline. Corrugations + speed = loss of control; the national lesson is max ~80 km/h on gravel, lower on new gravel and after rain. Punctures are routine — two spares on remote routes.
  3. Fuel arithmetic. Rule: refuel at half-tank, every station, every time. Distances lie on maps because gravel averages 50–60 km/h; budget range for 1.5× the map distance. Some stations close overnight; credit cards mostly work but carry cash.

Distances that surprise

Windhoek–Sossusvlei is “only” ~300 km but takes 5+ hours; Swakopmund–Sossusvlei via the Kuiseb is 350 km and a full day with photos; Etosha’s inner circuit exceeds 700 km of gravel. Plan 200–300 km per day, maximum, if you want to see anything.

Vehicle and paperwork

4×4 doubles (Toyota Hilux class) hire from ≈ N$1,200–1,800/day with camping kit; book 4–6 months out for June–October. Confirm cross-border permission in writing if heading to Botswana/Vic Falls, and photograph the vehicle’s existing damage meticulously at pickup.

The reward

Done right, Namibia is the world’s best road trip: a kettle boiling on a primus at Token entry points, the Fish River at golden hour, and a fuel-stop conversation in three languages. Read the essentials briefings for the visa (the 2025 rules now apply to many Western passports — eVisa in advance) and the health notes before you set the itinerary.
