The CKGR is 52,000 km² of semi-desert where wildlife is a rumour on the horizon until suddenly it is beside the vehicle — a lion on the Deception Valley road, oryx mirage-lines at Piper’s Pan. Mark and Delia Owens’ *Cry of the Kalahari* made this ground famous. It rewards the self-sufficient: deep sand tracks, no fuel, no shops, campsites with shade poles and long-drops, and a silence you will remember for years.

Wildlife safety

Lions here are genuinely wild (unhabituated) — stay in vehicles, never at pans after dark. The reserve is also the homeland of San and Bakgalagadi communities; respect residents’ privacy along access routes.
